FamilyTree Glass Studio is combining forces with glass artist John Chiles to bring you a weekend of free live glassblowing demonstrations! This event is part of Vermont Craft Council’s Spring Open Studio Weekend. We are moving our tanks and torches over to John’s state-of-the-art studio for a couple days, so that together we can showcase 2 very different styles of working within the same medium, all in one location.
Stop by and see for yourself! Ongoing demonstrations and a seconds sale will be on Saturday May 23rd and Sunday May 24th, from 10am – 5pm both days, in John’s studio at 690 Route 73 in Orwell.
John’s unique glassware is created using hot molten glass gathered from the furnace and worked on the end of a metal rod or blowpipe. You can find out more about him and his process here: http://www.johnchilesglass.com/
Here at Family Tree Glass Studio, we use an ancient technique called Lampworking to sculpt molten glass directly in the flame, using tools and glass rods to get surface detail and colorful designs encased within.

From the Vermont Craft Council website:
“Open Studio Weekend is a celebration of the visual arts and creative process, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to meet a wide variety of artists and craftspeople in their studios, some of which are only open to the public during this event.
Most Vermont craftspeople work in studios located in or close to their residences. These are places of production and inspiration located in downtowns as well as at the ends of dirt roads. Where ever their locations, they are exciting places to visit because they reflect the dynamic yet organized process that is used to produce the finished work of art.
The studio itself is enormously informative because you can see at a glance how the artist works. Buying or ordering work during an Open Studio sale is a unique experience because you have the opportunity to speak to the artist directly.
The self-guided Open Studio tour features the work of glassblowers, jewelers, printmakers, potters, furniture makers, weavers, ironworkers, painters, sculptors, quilt makers and wood carvers. Many galleries will host gallery talks and feature special exhibits in conjunction with this event.”
Local folks, and maybe even not-so-local folks… we hope to see you there!
