A Challenging Custom Order

I was recently asked if I could create a custom pendant that is a miniature, wearable version of a glass sculpture I made a few years ago titled “Threshold”. This piece is a much more detailed version of my Vulva pendant design, featuring two female figures making up the labia, entwined at the bottom and also at the top, where their heads meet together creating the clitoris. I was unsure if I would be able to stay true to the form, while keeping it a good jewelry pendant size, around 2″ long.

This is the original “Threshold” design, crafted to be awarded at NYU for Excellence in Midwifery in 2004.

The original piece was about 6″ tall, flame sculpted in a clear teal color, and mounted to be presented as a midwifery award that was given at NYU a few years back. Then I made another one in white, and mounted it in a shadowbox as a wall hanging sculpture. This second piece measured about 4″ on it’s own… a bit smaller, but still twice the size as this pendant should be! And to add to the challenge, my labia-loving customer wanted me to make it in a special glass color called “Pink Cadillac”, which is a notoriously difficult color to work with when trying for little details!

The second addition to the “Threshold” series is mounted in a shadowbox frame.

At first I wasn’t going to take on this challenge, but then I decided to just give it a try in clear glass. I was able to get the design down to 3″ So I took it on, figuring I should be able to shrink it down another inch, and ordered up a batch of Pink Cadillac colored rods.

Fortunately, I think the results were well worth the effort! It took me a little longer than I had expected to get it just right, but in the end, I have a whole new necklace design for vuvla enthusiasts to choose from! I am planning on making a few more of these in different colors, and eventually will offer them here on the website.
