One of the perks of my job is that people share the most amazing stories with me. When I customize a piece of glass art or jewelry for someone, it helps to know a little about that person… who they are and what they want this piece to commemorate, whether it be a celebration, or in times of healing and bereavement. Often a custom request is accompanied by some amazing photos and intimate details, giving me a glimpse into the window of that person’s spirit. Then I will meditate on these sacred stories and inspiring images while I create a unique piece just for them, offering them a piece of my spirit in return.
One of these stories comes from a mama who gave the ultimate gift, and as a token of appreciation she was gifted one of our Surrogate Pendants. I remember making this particular piece very well, because the family had taken the time to share a little about their experience with me when placing their order. That made the process of sculpting the pendant a much deeper experience for me, and by the time it was done I felt as if I knew their family personally somehow. A few months later, I received the most heart-warming message:
“Three months ago I gave birth to an amazing little boy. All babies and births are special, but this one was even more so. I was his surrogate, and it took years and years and many thousands of dollars and lots of medicines and injections to get him here. I delivered in their town across the country from my home to ensure that they could be present. In exchange, they housed and helped care for my two children and I during the last 2.5 weeks of my pregnancy. He was born naturally on June 5th right into his mama’s arms and went directly to her chest. It was absolutely amazing.
Before we flew home they gave me one of your surrogacy pendants. I’ve worn it almost every day since then. Today I got to see them for the first time since I flew back home when he was 6 days old. I snapped this picture and felt like I should share it.
Thank you for such thoughtful, meaningful jewelry. You have no idea what happiness this piece brings me and is a daily reminder of the amazing journey we went on.”
Alicia, I do have an idea, if it comes close at all to the happiness I feel being included, in some small way, in your amazing journey of pregnancy, birth, and surrogate motherhood. Thank you!
